The 3 main reasons that people struggle with IELTS writing and speaking
Many people come to us at upmyielts.com asking why they can’t get a higher score in IELTS writing/speaking. These are both production skills and there are many reasons as everyone’s case is slightly different. We asked one of the IELTS examiners that works for us what they thought and this is what they had to say.

People think that they better than they are at English. I see a lot of students who have studied English for years and years and have lots and lots of systematic errors. They can’t use articles, their pronunciation is poor, the vocabulary they use is archaic, to name but a few of the many problems I see. And this leads to point number 2.

IELTS is taught incredibly poorly by the vast majority of ‘teachers’. You don’t need to be a native speaker to be an IELTS teacher but you need to have a very good level of English. So many people use IELTS writing correction services and pay a couple of dollars to have their writing assessed. No teacher who knows IELTS will work for 2 dollars. People that use upmyielts show me their work corrected by other “experts” and it is awful. Most of the mistakes aren’t corrected, the scoring is completely wrong (usually way too high) and there is not feedback on what the student needs to do to get higher marks. So, this poor person thinks they will get 7+ in writing, for example, does the exam and gets 6. They have just wasted 150+ dollars.

People don’t prepare properly. Everyone wants to self study. Self studying a language is an awful idea. You think that what you say or write is correct, you continue to say/write the things that you think are correct, but what you are writing/saying may be completely wrong. However, you have made this ‘mistake’ so many times that you can’t stop doing it!
There are many reasons why people don’t get what they need in IELTS but, in my experience, these 3 are the big ones.

I used a different IELTS correction service. They gave me 8 for writing 4 times and I got 6 in the exam. This makes sense to me. I will contact you guys.
This is a very common problem. Some people send us essays that were corrected by other sites and they are completely inaccurate. They do a lot of damage and people waste their money making IELTS richer. That is why we started upmyielts.

This makes a lot of sense. I have taken IELTS 3 times. I used two different teachers here in India to help me and they told me everytime I will get Badn 7 or more in writing and speaking. I got 6 every time. They are scam. People don’t know what they are talking about. I sent my Task1 and 2 to you and paid for it. I hope to hear from you soon.
Hello Anjila. We have sent you a message and a Task 1 and 2 to try. It is a shame that you have not been advised properly but there are a lot of places that do this. Rest assured that we only use IELTs examiners in the UK and will show you what you need to do to get what you need in IELTS.
