What templates can I use in IELTS writing?

Is there any template for the IELTS academic task 1 that can literally work for any given question?

IELTS templates………do they exist? An IELTS examiners answers your question

No. The tasks are too varied. How could you use a template to describe a bar chart and a process? There are certain phrases that I suppose you could use for your introduction if you were faced with bar chart to describe like

“The given bar charts show + add your description here”

“From an overall perspective, it can be seen that…….”

When describing the data, you will also use familiar structures and phrases like

“In (year), Company A’s sales increased from (figure) to (figure) yet this was followed by a decrease of (percent) by (year).”

However, from just writing this, it would only fit certain question types so I’m just back at the beginning and will just reiterate, no, there are no templates!

A couple of things about learning templates for IELTS.

  1. Lower-level candidates do this because if your English is good enough, you don’t need to. What usually happens is that these low-level candidates use these amazingly complex parts of the template, then when they have written their part, it is littered with mistakes and so you get low marks anyway.
  2. Some people learn phrases but either the phrase they have been taught contain an error or they try to learn too many of them and reproduce them incorrectly or mixed up.
  3. They will hinder you. You will try to squeeze in these learnt phrases but in the wrong context and this is classed as a mistake.

So, what can you do instead?

  1. Practice all the different types of Task 1 that you may face.
  2. Make sure you have someone who can check your writing and apply the IELTS marking criteria (THIS IS KEY)
  3. Don’t prepare for IELTS writing or speaking on your own.

This is a simple way of getting what you need first time and saving yourself a lot of money.
