What is the biggest mistake people make with IELTS writing?

We get asked this a lot so we thought one of the IELTS examiners that works here would be best to answer this one.

What is one of the biggest problems we see in IELTS writing?

There’s lot so things I see that make me wonder wat kind of guidance that some candidates receive but a common one is length.

Sometimes, I see a Task of 250 words or a Task 2 of 400 or more.  Now, if your English is really good, then you can do this; it’s not a problem.  However, 95% of IELTS candidates are not good enough to do this and they write too much for them to control.

What happens if candidates write too much?

If a candidate needs Band 7 and writes 340 words say, then they have probably just made it impossible to get Band 7.0.  Writing too much means they don’t have time to check their work, they don’t plan well enough and this leads to all kinds of problems.

So, how many words should candidates write?

It depends on how good your English is.  If you can’t use articles properly, then write as little as possible.  I mean, if you can’t use a/an/the accurately, then nearly every one of your sentences is going to be grammatically incorrect.  This means your Grammar score is capped at Band 6.

So, you need to write as much as you can accurately.

But how do they know what is accurate or not?

This is a different issue.   A good teacher will be able to point out your mistakes.  What seems to be happening is that a lot of people are studying with teachers from their country, so Indian students study with Indian English teachers or Spanish learners study with Spanish English teachers.  I wouldn’t recommend this as they may have the same problems as you do.  So, lots of Indian IELTS candidates can’t use articles, and Spanish candidates can’t punctuate.  These are just examples though.
