What do IELTS examiners write in the speaking exam?

If you do the IELTS speaking test, you will notice that the examiner will write down some numbers while they talk to you.  But what are they writing?

Firstly, it is important to not get distracted by this as they have absolutely nothing to do with you.  They are not your scores!!  IELTS is very strictly timed and examiners get in trouble if their timing is not correct. If a candidate has more time to talk in any part of the test, they will have an advantage.  Therefore, IELTS examiners have to write down the start times of the different parts.

They will write down

  • the start time of your 1-minute preparation time in part 2.
  • the start time of when you start talking for 2 minutes in Part 2.
  • the start time of Part 3 to ensure it is maximum of 5 minutes long.

IELTS examiners will write down nothing else in your test.  If you would like to do an IELTS speaking exam on Zoom/Skype then you can order one here.  We will contact you to arrange a time to do and you receive a full report on your performance and what you need to do to get higher marks.
