What book would you recommend for IELTS writing?

This is a question we get asked a lot.  One of the IELTS examiners at upmyielts gave this answer.

To be honest, most of them are pretty poor.  They contradict each other and give some poor advice.

9 times out of 10, what stops people getting higher marks is accuracy and it is nearly always grammatical accuracy.  It is surprising the number of people that write sentences like

“Many people don’t buy mobile phone and use same phone for long time”

When it should be

“Many people don’t buy mobile phones and use the same phone for a long time”

These are basic grammatical mistakes and a lot of people don’t know that they are making them.  It is only when they do the exam, get 6 in writing, then come to us do they realise that they are making a lot of mistakes in English.

In the sentence above, there are 3 grammatical mistakes in a short sentence so imagine how many there are in an essay of 250-280 words.

So, when it comes to a book?  If this is your problem, then English Grammar in Use is the book to use.  Get the blue one as it covers everything you need.

I would say though that you need to find out what is stopping you from getting higher marks and the only way to do this is for someone to check your writing.  You can do that here and get an IELTS examiner to tell you exactly what you need to do to get higher marks.  It makes the world of difference.
