The 10 most common IELTS mistakes

Some of the IELTS examiners here gave their ideas (The list was much longer but we though it would be good to focus on 10!)

A few of the bigger ones

  1. They think that in the speaking test that they have to speak as much as they can.
  2. They think that in the writing exam that they have to write as much as they can.
  3. They don’t plan their writing before starting.
  4. They think they can self-study for IELTS and then they are surprised when their speaking/writing is much lower.
  5. They book another exam when they don’t get the score they need because they think they will have more luck next time.
  6. They think they have to use academic English (It’s a test of your English, not your academic English!!)
  7. They think that using idioms will impress the examiner (It doesn’t when you can’t use articles accurately)
  8. They follow INSTA/FBOOK accounts that are run by people who have poor English themselves.
  9. They don’t ask professionals for help.  This is probably the biggest!

Those are probably the most common mistakes people make with their IELTS preparation.
