We see this a lot from people who haven’t got the score they feel they deserve.  Now, we need to address this.  Why do people think they are being stopped from getting Band 7.0, for example, in writing?

Firstly, some people don’t get Band 7 in writing because they are not band 7.0 level.  To get to Band 7, the majority of your sentences need to be correct (grammatically and lexically).  This is tough for a lot of people.

Secondly, people don’t prepare properly.  You can’t prepare for IELTS speaking and writing by watching YouTube videos or using bots to mark your writing.  It doesn’t work for 99% of people.

Thirdly, and possibly most importantly, IELTS is taught incredibly badly.  People have shown us writing corrections from a number of IELTS writing correction services and they are awful.  They give you a score that is way higher than your writing deserves and the worst think is that people then book an IELTS exam thinking they are ready to get a great score.  What happens next?  They get Band 6 in writing.  But how can this be?  Well, you have just been scammed, scammed by the $5 writing service.  Stay away from them; they are the real scam.

Lastly, writing is everybody’s worst skill.  How often do you write any more?  People read on the internet more, sure, they listen to music or the dialogue on films, and listen to people speaking all the time.  But write?  The last time I actually wrote anything was an IELTS example Task 2.  This means that it will be the weakest of the 4 skills, probably in your own language too.
