Using AI for IELTS
There are now lots of IELTS providers using AI to assess your IELTS writing and speaking. They are cheap, yes, but they are cheap for a very important reason. They aren’t very good. AI is not good enough yet. These IELTS providers are using AI to generate example answers and to check your writing/speaking. This is not helping you.
Why?
Well, let’s look at an example questions from the speaking exam.
A Part 1 question
“Do you wear sunglasses?”
AI generated answer
“I wear sunglasses as a fashion statement. They really reflect my personal style and taste. Depending on the occasion, they add that extra touch to my overall look”
Human generated
“Yeah, I live in a country where it’s sunny all the time and as I get older, my eyes have got really sensitive to the sun. I wear them all the time when I go outside, especially when I drive, as I just can’t see very well without them”
Now the difference here is in the tone. The AI generated answer comes across as very arrogant. It’s like the speaker is a model or film star, and basically, no one speaks like this. IELTS is about discovering your natural level of English, and trying to replicate these AI answers will just make your speaking sound quite weird.
