How to write an IELTS Task 1 – Process

Writing a process in Task 1 generally has the lowest word count so don’t worry if you only hit 150 words.  There isn’t really very much to say about them usually.

So, to start with, you need to introduce what the process is about; usually it is making something, like how to make cut diamonds/electricity/cement etc. So, you need to state what the process is showing and then you need some kind of overview.

The overview may be that the process takes 6 steps, or that the process takes place in 2 different locations, or that there is a clear divide in the process. You need to mention this in your overview and you can see examples of these kinds of process questions below.

Then, the rest is pretty logical. Start at the beginning and describe each part of the process. Link each part together with phrases like “After this…., The next part of the process is…, What follows this is……” etc and you are done.

It is probably the easiest Task 1, if you know how to do it.

If you want to try a process and have an IELTS examiners correct, assess and advise on your writing, you can order one here.

Nowhere on the internet offers this service (that we know of!)
