How to write IELTS Task 1

How to write a Task 1 in the General exam

One of the writing examiners here explains how to write a Task 1 in the General exam.  You only get this advice at upmyielts.com.

First, read the question and see whether it is informal or semi-formal (You will never be expected to use formal English; it is a different language!)

Second, check to see whether you have been told how to start, i.e. Dear Sir/Madam etc

Third, make sure you understand the purpose of the letter (apology, asking for a recommendation, etc)

Fourth, read the 2 bullet points. You are going to have to develop each one equally so now is the time to plan your writing.

Fifth, start your letter in the correct way and write your introduction.

Sixth, paragraphing is important so put bullet points 1 and 2 into a paragraph. Or, if you can develop point 1 a little more than 2 and 3, put point 1 into its own paragraph.

Seventh, put bullet points 2 and 3 into another paragraph (or just point 3)

Eighth, end your writing in the correct way (Best wishes, Yours sincerely etc)

Ninth, go back to the start and check your writing. Are there any errors? Is paragraphing ok? Is the style correct? This is probably the most important part of the writing exam.

Move onto part 2! The fun never stops.  Here is how to write a Task 2
